This is the screen I am talking about:

I am talking about using a remote control only.

In the DefaultWide skin, pressing the remote control up key from the equivalent screen navigates to the Topbar menu (making it visible). I realize that I could map a remote control key to activate shutdown, but I don't want to do that because I want to show the dialog that asks how I want to close down; e.g. restart, shutdown, close MP, etc.. The danger would be, by having a button cause shutdown without a caution screen, that our cat could shutdown the computer accidentally, as could one of us humans.

In the screen above, I have to go to Root Menu, then 'go left' to select the shutdown option. It's not critical, but a nice-to-have, to be able to go to the Topbar from the main screen above.

I've seen at least one other post that agrees with me about that.

There is a remote-control action that does this. Sorry, I don't remember what it is called (my laptop does not have MP installed), but looking in the remote-control config file (which is on my laptop), the value of "cmdproperty" is "99":

Edit: The problem with this solution is whether you have an unused button on the remote control that you could allocate to this function. People may not, so in general I agree that there should be a away to close MP with as few button-presses as possible.

Although not vital, I think it would be a nice-to-have how to copy the way the DefaultWide skin worked.

Well, seems you did not check the BasicHome Editor
There you will find 2 EXIT Options, one for just close MP and the other to show the options.
Add one of those to a main/submenu, and you´re done

Hmmm. It's been a bit confusing because earlier you said that you'd solved all problems except top-bar, but Tony seemed to think it was still outstanding. Later you confirmed it wasn't implemented yet, and latest seems to be that Tony has confirmed he is still waiting for it.

Tony, can you please install the latest update from here and double check whether what you're looking for is or is not yet available.
