How do I create a theme? I can see that there are three themes that are already set up but I can't see how to create new themes.

Okay. I can see where the themes are stored.

I've performed a new installation of MediaPortal and have used the basic home editor to make changes but am unable to see which files were updated by making those changes.

Can anyone tell me which files control what appears in the main screen , as configured by the BasicHome editor?

Any help would be much appreciated.

The only file that seems to change when I edit BasicHome is SkinSettings.xml and when I save it to my new themes folder and reset the original back to default and change the theme to my new theme nothing changes.

Is the SkinSettings.xml file one that cannot be placed in a theme folder?

Maybe you can do that : (but i'm not sure)
You make your modification, and you copy the whole folder without the theme folder into a folder inside theme folder.

So make your change : copy all files from C:\ProgramData\Team MediaPortal\MediaPortal\skin\DefaultWideHD and copy it to
C:\ProgramData\Team MediaPortal\MediaPortal\skin\DefaultWideHD\Themes\TEST.

Maybe it will work or not and maybe you have just to indicate the TEST name into SkinSettings.xml ?

I suspect there may be a chicken and egg situation here. I am only guessing but I think I have to tell the SkinSettings.xml file that the theme to use is, say, 'Tony'.

If the 'Tony' folder contains a file called SkinSettings.xml, then how will it know to use that file, because it's already read the SkinSettings.xml file in the DefaultWideHD folder?

I have found that when I copy the default SkinSettings.xml file into the standard location, then the default main screen is displayed. When I copy by customized SkinSettings.xml file into the standard location then I get the customized behaviour. However, when I put the customized SkinSettings.xml file into the Tony theme folder I get the standard behaviour.

I may well have misunderstood how this works so I would welcome any advice.

Yep, i don't know how it works too, maybe we don't need to copy SkinSettings.xml

Skinsettings.xml must always be in the root of the skin directory you do not copy it to the themes folders, skinsettings.xml is still read from root directory even when a theme is in use.

Copy a theme.xml from another theme into the folder of the theme you are creating then any xml's ( minus skinsettings ) you wish to modify go into the theme folder using the same structure as the root skin.

Then go into settings Skin in GUI, change to your theme ("Tony"?) and all should work as expected
