Will I be using Windows 8? Sure, at least I give it a try when I get a licence to test it. There are too many technical improvements under the hood to be ignored

There's a free 90 day trial of the Enterprise edition here. You don't need an MSDN subscription to try it.

I know, but it will be just extra work to test something. I'm quite sure W8 is good enough to be used as dev environment.

Well, Mediaportal can play DVDs with both LAV-filter and Microsofts codecs.

Did you try to register qdvd.dll from a working Win7 installation ?

I tried to install the dll and the DVD Navigator as well as Microsoft DTV-DVD Video and Audio Decoders showed up.
However when trying to play a DVD nothing happened. I did also try to use the LAV Filter Decoders. No luck with them.

DVD no way working. Also strange things with remote - MCE remote was working perfect from start, then it stopped working for adjusting volume. Every other button is ok, but not volume.

For the DVD stuff

I have now two versions qdvd.dll from a Win8 Customer Preview version. One from /system folder and the other from Wow....
So i think one is a 32bit version and the other a 64bit.
I will try both to check if the .dll works other as this from Win7
