While good coding, support and features are enough for lots of people, without a pretty interface (regardless of the CPU hit (provided it doesn't freeze the interface)) there are lots of people who will turn away.
Especially these days, with web pages and OSs often spending more time/money on appearance than content, everyone is forced to do more on the visual front or look risk looking outdated.
It seems like a high resolution skin would be a good option. Even if it needs a disclaimer that it needs a fast machine to run on, it would at least be a choice.
The skins that are being developed now are totally awesome, and I don't think MP risks being labeled anything but "stunning" visually when they are completed, but as more people become 1080i/p capable, they will expect these skins in that resolution regardless of the consequences.
