I have avi's with external subs & have no problem cycling through different subs or shutting them off.
I use AutoGK to encode to xvid with external subs. I pick at least 2 sub tracks. If there's only 1, MP will not turn them off. In DirectVobSub Filter, I leave 'Display only forced subs' unchecked. I seem to remember that if it's checked, I can't cycle through them.
The one problem with the way I do it is that it can be a pain figuring out which track is the forced subs.
That being said, I'll try the mkv thing since you guys say it's better.

well with mkv you can have many video, audio streams buildin a single file and many subs as well and just cycle through them with a single button click.

many video streams is not that usefull but audio and subs are great.

    how come?

I don't know why it doesn't work with my setup, but I have tried with multiple sub tracks in an mkv, and I can only ever turn on and turn off the first track. I can cycle through the tracks in MP Classic or any other media player..... just not Media Portal.

I agree, avi's are a pretty primitive container compared to mkv's. I guess the thing that will drive a change will be what goes into consumer DVD's in the future as far as container and codec support. I'm thinking H.264 might help to drive it along. MeGui only rips into the mp4 or mkv container. Unfortunately I don't think GK or Auto GK are being developed anymore, so I'd say those tools will stick with avi's.

I think I might try out the ffdshow approach and use it to manipulate the subs..... it seems that sub handling through MP itself is a bit of black magic (although changing to mkv's certainly fixed 90% of my problem, which was being able to at least turn them on or off), and mapping the remote key to the ffdshow control for subs seems a logical alternative.

    @ pannivas

all the amine release groups have gone to it.

even i have gone to it, when i rip dvds with staxrip.

it is basically superior in every way to avi which is over 10years old. It has different audio/subtitle streams, chapters, file linking (imagine only downloading the middle bit in your main tv eps but the file automaticaly links to the start part which is another file) think of the bandwidth people. Also a big point is that h.264 in an avi wrapper is quite the bad idea, although possible i think.

    @ globaldonkey

i don't think MP can deal with subs by itself at all. I think it can just control directvobsub/vsfilter and ffdshow. You still need something to actually add the subs to the image/graph.

Yes, and that is the role of directvobsub. But it is what MP is doing when you press the "L" key (or a remote key that simulates the keyboard "L") that is the key here. That is definitely something inside Media Portal. By default, it looks like it just sends a on / off command to directvobsub. If you map your remote to an ffdshow shortcut for subtitles, then you bypass that and manipulate ffdshow directly. Would that make sense? I am second guessing what's going on here, in the hope of trying to understand......

I posted two different "methods" for controlling subtitles and both kinds work for me.

What button/key specifically are you using?

Are you aware the command to toggle subs is different from the one to cycle through them.

1st one is show subtitles and to cycle through them you need to bind next subtitle track.

also make sure if your playing with a remote that you don't set conflicting commands to the remote id est. fullscreen says show subtitles and no condition says next subtitle track.

    Hi,
I posted a patch to fix problems with avi and mkv subtitles,
attached is a binary core.dll that should work with 0.2.3.0 RC1 and on (just replace it in MediaPortal folder). Also if you have problems with subtitles for other media types please write it and I will check it.

I did not try this patch yet.

Does it solve the problem when you cycle through subtiltes to turn them off (remote button) but they stay on?

Why is it not included in the latest SVN?

I do not know why this xml was in my theme folders, it must have sneaked in some time ago (years?). I simply removed the file. The Latest Media Handler plugin seems to be working as expected. I've had no lock-ups.
