Wow, now that's a can of worms if true.

The implications for existing satellite receiver owners to not be able to get freesat without a special logo'd box, does sound like some serious form of encryption involved.

    Hi

I guess it depends if they are talking about the programmes or data.

The quote on the link mentions Freesat services and data which could mean the interactive part of the specification. This would be equivalent to MHEG5 for Freeview which the Hauppauge cards do not include software to do at present.
Also, I would guess that Freesat are only going to guarantee that Freesat certified receivers will work. As with everything with Freesat, this is of course just speculation and cannot be verified until the launch.

I assume the Freesat launch is getting reasonably close as Argos have details (although no stock) of standalone receivers on their website:

Most (all?) small PC cases accept only ITX motherboards, which have only one PCI-E slot. So you could install only one PCI-E tuner card. A quad-tuner card would give you four tuners, but if you wanted more tuners you would need to use the TBS eight-tuner card, or use external tuners, either USB tuners (available with single or dual...

I also have never used a set-top box with MP, but I think that you need to use an IR emitter (aka "IR blaster"). The IRSS software controls the emitter, and transmits IR signals under the direction of MP. The IR signal is received by the IR receiver within the set-top box, and so can be used to change channel and so on. The set-top...
