I've used gspot to see what the files were encoded with, two of the videos i tried were Xvid's the other was a divx, this is starting to look more like a hardware issue, I've tried the videos on a laptop using all the same codecs and setup and it works fine.

<sarcasm>Heyyy theres a good idea</sarcasm> LOLOLOL

that was the first thing I tried, thing is....it's a jetway board (i know I know....dodges the flames) its a jetway J7F2WE1G5D board with the cn700 chipset, I've installed the supposedly updated drivers, when I tried the ones from jetway it said "unsuported hardware" and failed, soooo I got the cn700 drivers for the via chipset from via and it all installed fine, the thing that bothers me is...if it was the drivers/hardware wouldnt it do the same thing in VLC?

VLC uses overlay, MP uses VMR9.

Take it you still have green movies.

Might be worthwhile running dxdiag, just to see if there are any issues, also check this is version 9c.

Yeah it's all still green, I've tried driver genius to see if theres anything needs updating (after via and jetway both say theres no updates) and its found an 11meg hyperion pro driver (whatever that is) so I'm letting it install now and will update on progress.

GAH!!!!! its still not working!!!! direct x and everything else is up to dat its just NOT WORKING!!!!!!!!,

it must be a hardware issue, exactly the same install is working on my laptop and three other pcs.

I do really not know much about codecs, but I had a similar problem with WMV files. Everything turned pink and green as soon as I tried to play wmv files.
The issue was solved for me by going into the K-Lite Codec Pack -> Configuration -> fftshow video decoder

In the table of codecs I changed the Decoder for WMV3/9 from disabled to libavcodec. That solved the issue for me.

Well, I gave the hotfix a try, no joy, upgraded to windows media player 11 and its still doing exactly the same, it sounds like the issue described in the hotfix or media player 10 , thats it...I'm stumped

Fixed, I think. Certainly the vintage MP2 installer that I was using no longer installs the LAV filters. I can only assume that these were never part of the install package itself, but rather downloaded during the install, and that link no longer exists. Shame that the installer doesn't indicate this. Last time when I installed the...

I don't know about MP2 but as you said you tried MP1 too, how is the MP music config ? MP(1) will only use LAV if you select "Internal DirectShow player" as music output, but then you lose gapless playback. If you you don't have multichannel music you can choose WASAPI as the output and set the number of speakers to stereo. I have...
