The skin wiki seems to imply the home screen skin can be changed.

How do I change the home screen so it has a lighter background?

There are a range of skins you can choose from, see below.

that depend on the skin. Some skins are installed over the Mediaportal extension installer (start->team mediaportal->mediaportal->mepo extension installer), some of the skins have they own installer, so you have to download them and execute the file (like streamedmp par ex.) and some skins have to be downloaded (.mpe1 file) and then double click the file.

In changing the skin, your doing just that, changing the colour schema, layout and brightness, but generally, your limited to what the skin designers view on 'light and dark'.

Suggest you take a look at the skins section within downloads, look at the associated web sites, many have excellent collection of screen shots to help, and then install and try - you can have many skins installed without issue, you select which you want in setting GUI and try it out.

Personal recommendation - Frames, works well at 1080p on my 37" screen, and default Wide is very good, although more limited in plugin support.
