I'm not sure if it was mentioned earlier in the thread but could it be possible to have a user configurable Splash screen ie they select the screen from a folder or import their chosen file?
Or could it be possible for the splash screen to be part of the graphics within the skin folder and then theme / style could be nore closely linked?

Yes, I mentioned this on an earlier page of this thread -- but I'm glad I'm not the only one who likes the idea. I think the splash screen should be configurable so it can match whatever skin someone is using. The problem with having just one splash screen is that if we have a splash that matches any one skin, it probably won't match the others: if we change the splash so it matches Vanessa's 3DMP, it really will look strange for someone using the Project Mayhem skin.

That said, I think there should be requirements for any splash screen: it can't change/distort the basic MP logo; it needs to show the version/build of MP; and it needs to show the current status ("Initializing Fonts" and that sort of message). Part of the reason for the splash is just to give people something to see while MP loads, since it takes several seconds...but another reason is to help users submit bug reports, where they really need to know what version of MP they're using and if it crashes when it loads, what step it was on.

I must admit that I didn’t put much thought into my first splash. So I sat back and started to play around with ideas and this is what I came up with…

with icon and icon reflection
v3-4.png

with icon and no reflection
v3-3.png

no icons
v3-1.png

I also must admit that the logo gets lost in it. But I have to fool around some more so it will look correct in the image and stands out further.

    Couple of things...

Different splashes for different skins - Hmm maybe, but there is one overriding MediaPortal identity, and should be the same no matter what skin you use.

Be careful with putting certain images on the spash - Not everyone will use a TV, listen to music, or check the weather - and there's no way you'd fit in enough seperate symbols to convey all you can do with MediaPortal!

Why not make it mean something? What does 'portal' mean in our context, and what can you do with that? How can you visually express MediaPortal?

That is why I supplemented the image of the film reel with the icons. Because I felt that the splash with just the film represented a video atmosphere and just those few little icons open up the conception off what MP was more about. Plus the overall feel of the splash dose not represent a particular skin IMO.

I only use TV Video and music

PS I’m over shift work, it’s 0300 here and I cant get to sleep…

    Splash screen

Here are my MP splash screens. I didn't add any drop shadow or border to the frame - yet.
The first one (the blue one) is made to fit Vanessa's beautiful 3DMP skin. (More to splashscreens come...)
