The funny thing is it just started doing it.
I'm just now trying with a backup to see if that will work (since i do know i didnt have the problem before).
Disable both BrowseTheWeb & HTPCInfo plugin and try to start MP again.
If that doesn't work, start MP with the WatchDog option 1, which disables all plugins. If it still fails, exit MP and attach the .zip with logfiles.
And maybe it's a good idea to update to 1.9 Final (or 1.10 Pre Release)?
I too have this (recent) problem. I'm running 1.10pre. I have noted that using Avallanche or StreamedMP skins I get this problem, but using Titanius skin starts fine, But that might just be a coincidence,
I have experienced the same with old versions of StreamedMP, so i switched to Titanius some time ago.
My plan was to upgrade to 1.9, but not before it's working again.
(Did try with 1.9 before same issue)
Now trying with a backup version and BrowseTheWeb & HTPCInfo plugin disabled.

The problem is we have a family member who relies on MiniDisplay and I don't know if upgrading the set up is going to spoil compatibility with that plug in. The set up...

I always have DVB subtitles enabled in "MP Config", but I actually switch on subtitles only for those films that have deafening sound effects and music, combined with inaudible dialogue. I have never noticed the problem that you have described, but I also use the EVR renderer, and not the Madvr renderer. So...
