Tablets are the same way with the buttons using 40% of the screen

Strange. This is the expected screen layout on tablets and TV-s using single column menu. Can you change the settings to uncheck the "Single column menu on tablets" and post the screenshot again?

That did the trick
Had to untick then tick the "Single column menu on tablets" setting to make it work.

I have upgraded my S8+ to Android 8 and have tested the new PiP feature with the actual beta of this app.

I can change to PiP mode. That is working fine.
When I touch then the small video window it grows a little and I can choose between closing it and fullscreen video.
When I choose fullscreen the video switches to fullscreen and a second later it closes.
Is this a bug or do I do anything wrong?
