The PSP does have a IR device built in, and it is possible to use it as a universal remote.

HOWEVER this does involve being able to run homebrew applications on your PSP. To do this you need to be running firmware 1.50 (if you have an original PSP) or similar.

Not too sure about reverting back on the PSP; I'm not that keen as it can brick your PSP.

If you are still interested though....
I've done a quick search on this, and came up with the following link:
The problem http://dl.qj.net/PSP-Universal-Remote-1.2-Gaming-Consoles-PSP-Homebrew-Applications/pg/12/fid/1442/catid/189

Also check out:http://http://lifehacker.com/software/psp/use-your-psp-as-a-universal-remote-152346.php

So it looks like as long as you can run homebrew apps on your PSP, you will be able to use it as a universal remote, and control MediaPortal.

Hope this helps!!

there has been a lot of talk here already on mp and the psp. but the best think i can think of is to use pocketvnc for the psp. its a remote desktop app to connect to your computer. i am thinking of requesting/ making (never made an mp skin) a mp skin for 480x272 resolution. if mp runs windowed in that resolution, you can use the psp to browse you movies/music and start playback, do volume and skip.

maybe this is something for you too?

Thank you for this tip! I'm moving MP TV Server to a new machine. I installed the 64-bit version and most of the MP firewall rules were set to Public. After many hours of troubleshooting I've given up and accepted that it's just "one of these things" when using madVR for watching live TV. I've now ticked the box to "Use EVR for LiveTV", with a default display refresh rate of 50Hz. In combination with tweaking some of the Nvidia 3D settings for the MP executable only, I now have a...

Well, all that remains is to find someone who will add this render if it is a render.
