record TV when I am not at home (1 Viewer)

I am looking for an alternative to Windows 7 Media Center that I can use to schedule and record TV programs when I am not at home. Is MediaPortal a workable alternative and does it run on Windows 7?

The simple answer is "yes" and "yes".

I run MediaPortal on Windows 7 Home Premium x64 with a Hauppauge HVR-4000 and a Hauppauge HVR-4400. I use it as a personal video recorder and a media centre and when I am not using it or it is not recording it is set to hibernate. Set up is more complex than Windows 7 Media Center (mainly while you get familiar with it), but then the result is more customisable. If you get stuck there is the benefit of this very active forum where you may find the answer already (using the search) or request assistance. There is also the wiki which has a lot of useful information, but due to the fact that MediaPortal is regularly updated (unlike Windows Media Center) is does sometimes fall behind.

Thank you for the information. Is there a specific version I need to download if I want to run it on Windows 7 Ultimate 32 bit and where do I go to download that version?

Try the 1.1.0 final version, that should do the trick.

If I were you I'd use 4TheRecord as the scheduling and TV server and MediaPortal as the front-end, it integrates perfectly. 4TheRecord comes with a very good web-server that you can use to schedule programs from other machines on the network or even the net if set-up correctly.
