yeah i'm starting to wonder if perhaps even the skin designers are shying away from 1920x1080 skins as they may or may not have a desktop PC monitor that goes that high to test what it looks like ?

I was just tinkering with a few settings in the MediaPortal configuration and am happy to have found the cause of the problem.
Disabling the option "Single seat setup: force RTSP usage" under "TV/Radio", "Advanced Options" resolved the issue.
After I disabled this option, I was able to delete the recordings the first time...

To other people reading about this 'issue', Doskabouter provided me with a fix/patch. It is a modified version of tswriter.ax which solved the problem with dolby digital plus audio.
