Re: AW: Feedack on 1.2 music changes

Unfortunatly shares view is the prefered one of my wife and me. So the plugin actually don't helps very much. With shares view support, we could do more testing... ;)

I think the bigger question for Jameson, although he is trying valiantly to meet the need, is why do folks prefer shares view.

Once files are properly tagged, the myriad of database views is the only way to fly IMHO. If there is something about shares view that makes it better, I am sure that something could be replicated in a database view, or is it just that nobody likes to tag their files?

well, I think it depends on your "listening behaviour/preferences" and how many files you have.

For example we don't have that much files and prefer to listen Radio. Music files we have stored in different folder, of different reasons. For example folder with/by

    • Interpret & Album (standard...)
    • children songs for the little one of us
    • "Party" songs of all kind
    • X-Mas songs
    • carnival/folk music

Of course it would be possible to get all these with Database/playlist functions. But why should we? To create a folder and copy a file into it is easier, then tagging files (in the way I need it and the internet defaults maybe differ from). And espacially my wife don't want deal with new functions (if they don't bring very much benefit).

To get from one share to another takes only one to four clicks and is allways the same functonality. So it's very easy to use for our needs.

@jameson_uk: I copied the plugin and mapped Play Action/Buttonto it. So next days will show how usefull it is. Feedback maybe after the weekend! :)

Since UI preferences seem to differ a lot in the music section, we should come up with a model that suits all needs and compensates for the loss of drag and drop.

    Proposal for the non-database part
    - 3 columns: Shares, Playlist (temporary), Favourites (permanent)
    - Introduce "Mark" mode (vs. "Play" mode)

    Regular use case
    - User enters music section, sees 3 or 2 (playlist and favs are interchangeable) columns
    - Playlist is either empty or contains tracks from last session [configurable]
    - Favourites contains tracks from last (and previous) session(s) because it's permanent
    - Either "Play" or "Mark" mode is checked

Play Mode (single tracks, single folder)
    - Default play behavior for select is configured in MP config
    - All Play options like Play Now, Play Next, Enqueue, Delete... are available via context menu
    - Playlist (or favs when playing fav tracks) always shows what MP is doing next
    - Example: You select/play a track in a Shares folder, Playlist shows selected track on top, consecutive folder files below.

Mark Mode (multiple tracks, multiple folders)
    - Select marks or unmarks, tracks are stacked folderwide until operation is chosen
    - Context menu lists options like enqueue, delete...

Playlists can be saved and restored later.

Only thing left would be to collect options we want to appear in the respective context menus of Play and Mark mode.

This should cover all needs or did I miss something?

Instead of playing a track once you select it, you collect tracks to later perform a bulk operation on them. While browsing through the folders you collect them like in a shopping cart. Think rightclick in Total Commander, but across multiple folders.

Later operations are Add to playlist, Add to Favs, Delete...

AW: Re: Feedack on 1.2 music changes

Would this help if it worked in shares view?

If with I will update it during the week

    YES! :D

I have not had chance to particularly test this and the code is really bad

This however should work in shares view too.

Would something like this actually make music work the way you want?

Seems to work fine :) only one thing: The track is added to playlist and the former playlist is lost.

Would wish that the playlist kept untouched, until I add track via "add to playlist" to it. "normal continous" Playback shouldn't affect the playlist (liek the "listening before hearing" thing..?).

Not sure what you are saying. Using this plugin then you will be able to preview tracks. When does the playlist get cleared?

I'm using the last plugin, which enables "continous Playback from a single Track on" (with shared view).

    Case (from the weekend :D):

    • Made a playlist for BBQ later in the evening
    • want to listen some other music now --> start plalyback with the modded play button/action
    • the first song of the "now" music is added to playlist (and the "later" is lost)

expected/wish: Modded play function starts continous playback without clearing/changing the playlist

Of course I could save the "BBQ playlist", but actually it's also meant to be only for "single use" (but later...) ...

    Ok?

OK and this is the whole issue of having many different use cases and very few remote control buttons ;)

The best solution here would probably have been save the playlist as you say and then delete it when you were done. The other option was to use the plugin to play the music you wanted to without changing the playlist.

The other (first plugin) would have done this by adding tracks to the playlist in the background and would not have been affected when you started playing music normally.

I will improve playlists in 1.3 but it is quite difficult to get all of these different use cases to work with very few remote buttons whilst still actually being usable.

Ideas on how to do this (without re-introducing the issues that were in 1.1) appreciated...

So why not delete the BBQ playlist after single use?

The clearing of the playlist for currently playing items is pretty much in line with any hard- or software player like winamp. Any other behavior would confuse the majority of users in my opinion.

You could request a button in context menu "Play Now w/o changing Playlist", or even request a feature to add/remove those options via MP configuration. But don't forget those are special needs ("Extrawurst" to stay in BBQ picture) and not mainstream :)

Thanks for your reply. In my configuration this setting is set to "no". To avoid misunderstandings, the MP window size changes on screen resolution changes, MP always fulfills the whole screen. Also, the home screen buttons size is adjusted. Only the font size is not adjusted to the new screen resolution.
