There is some configuration that must be done after installation. In this case, the password for the SQL server. Although the installation is one-click, it cannot handle ALL configuration steps without the password. Default user is sa and password (case sensitive) is MediaPortal

So, what is the proper way of installing mediaportal for someone that has no desire for "TV" but wants to be be able to playback h.264 files?? It seems like pretty poor implementation to link the two together.

They are not linked, you should still be able to play h.264 files with the correct codecs\hardware installed, see SAF by hoborg for more details.

If you do ask a question there, he will want your hardware specs, at least which graphics chip\card you are using and memory allocated to it, be aware auto setting in bios is usually no good for gpu memory performance.

No, I have correct codecs for h.264 installed and configured... but if you do not install TVserver, the option is greyed out (although conspicuously showing the default h.264 decoder) ... but if you try to play any HD media you will get an error.

How about using the default user and password to do ALL configuration steps. ;)

I have to remember enough user names and passwords already. As a user why would I ever care what user name and password my MediaPortal intallation is using???? Can you imagine your PVR asking you for a user name and password to set up the database of recorded files????

And then everyone with existing SQL database (for other purposes with other user) is unhappy. The user and password is easy to enter, once only, and it is also well advertised.

No, I cant imagine that. Neither can I imagine my other PVR will be capable of doing what my TVServer installation is doing. With the right setup and plugins I can view TV & recording on other PC's/TV's in my house. I can Scedule recordings while I am oversea via IM or via my Nokia phone. I can watch my recorded programs on my compatible Nokia phone, also from oversea. Etc...

I don't understand... how creating another database user purely for MediaPortal usage would upset anything else?

    How about this:

    OneClick installation
Check if one of the supported databases is installed (MySQL or MS SQL Server)
    * if only MySQL is installed create MediaPortal default user/password
    * if only MS SQL Server is installed create MediaPortal default user/password
    * if both MySQL and MS SQL Server is installed choose MySQL and create MediaPortal default user/password

Not OneClick installation (probably selected by an advanced user)
Ask questions like which Database to use, which user name and so on.

What I'm trying to say is: I don't care what username / password MediaPortal is using... I just want to be able to record and watch files. :)

Personally, I don't like the fact that it uses a SQL database anyway (Beyond TV doesn't). SQL server takes up precious resources that I could be using for something else. Not to mention it doesn't seem all that stable with Vista x64 since SQL crashed on my HTPC last night. Then again, Media Portal had some issues of it's own as well... Weather wasn't working at all.

I was trying to find a previous team discussion months ago where some problems were discussed with automated passwords. What I found in that discussion is that the problem was only related a bootstapper installation (of which I have NO knowledge) where one can not script the password. Other options were available and Chemelli already committed work in this area a month ago. Should already be part of 1.1 alpha. So my memory (getting old) was only able to recall a small part of the discussion.

maybe setting loglevel to debug might pinpoint the difference between normal and stuck? Preferable with as much disabled as possible also try to see if anything is happening during stuck for the mediaportal process(resource monitor, disk activity, cpu usage, anything) maybe other programs competing for resouces?

I used to use the grabber but a few years back it disappeared on FreeSat DVBS. That is when I changed to EPG Collector. The extra benefit is that it collects from the Sky platform so it will give EPG for all the FreeSat channels plus the unencrypted movie channels on the Sky platform. It also allows me to pick the channels dedicated...
