How does one get an account? Why not use a FREE news groups indexing service rather than one where you require a secret handshake and invitation to join?

I've always had good luck finding just about everything I've ever wanted using merlins portal and binsearch.info...
The fact that only a select few can use this feature of this plug-in is ridiculous. Not to mention I hear you have to pay for a newzbin account, which pretty much goes against everything dealing with MediaPortal... You know, being opensource and all.

I don't think so, because MP has no way of knowing at which timestamp the external player stopped playback.
Best way to achieve this would be to use an auto-resume feature in your external player itself. (MPC-HC can do that, I don't know about VLC)
