You have not filled in your HTPC specifications, so it is not clear whether you want to receive Sky (or other) satellite channels, or merely want "Sky Planner" functionality on terrestrial TV.

That thread describes a user-written "add on" that is not an official part of the MP distribution (and so is more difficult to set up -- read the thread!). I have no experience of it, but I believe that it tries to support series linking in the Sky fashion.

(2) If you want "Sky Planner" functionality on terrestrial TV, MP does not offer true "series record", where every episode of a series will be recorded without recording duplicates. However, MP does offer "repeated recording", with various choices as to how to select the episodes to record. My most-used choice is "weekly on this channel", which limits recording to one channel and one day of the week, but does not fix the time of day (so the broadcast time can vary from one week to the next). There are other choices available ("every time on this channel", "every time on all channels", etc.).

As far as I know, there is no reminder facility in MP. There might be a plug-in for this, but I am not very familiar with plug-ins. Perhaps someone else knows?

I'm after the 'Sky Planner' functionality.

1. Doesn't that just get the channel numbers?

2. So there's no way that I can schedule the programs I like and have MP remind me that they're starting?

Well, not everybody knows what that means - including myself. Could you describe what you would like to do?

There is the reminder function as pointed out by mm. Not sure if it works though.
Then you have recording automatics where certain shows will record without user interactions, e.g. series
You may also use specialised plugins such as TV Wishlist to record anything (based on search strings) that eventually will get broadcasted in the future.

Sky Planner lists a schedule of programs that you like (by date, time and channel) and tells you when they are about to start.

There is no such functionality, neither built-in nor via plugin. The closestbwould be TVWishList but it is not really what you are looking for.

How does the system know what you like?
