Sorry for not following up, but neither the "exclusive directx" nor the "external player" option solved the problem for me, I already tried. I am converting to mkv whenever possible to solve the issue. (It's just a remux, not a re-compression so it's fairly speedy.)

You can get a simple KVM switch, like you said. Although I bet your main machine, with enough memory, would work fine, you'd have to struggle with MediaPortal running in the background the whole time.

I had the same problem, it worked when changing aspect ratio to "Original" resulting in a small picture in the middle of the screen.. all other gave black screen..
And i found the problem, turning off deinterlacing in settings/tv makes it work again!
the video still looks deinterlaced so there must be on anyway but the setting breaks...

You will need change any audio settings you can find to SPDIF passthrough. There should be one for your card in the control panel under sound or whatever config program it uses. There will also be those settings for the audio codecs in MP. All you want to do is pass the raw sound to your external decoder and let it do all the work.

You will need to get them playing correctly in WMP. MP will use the same codec as WMP. You might need to use filter manager or something similar to see what codec .VOB files play with by default and change it to a working one. If you are able to change it to the same codec Power DVD uses, then that will fix the problem for you.
