You dont need a 500w Power Supply, you will only get more heat developing and thus more noise from fans. Go for the smallest power supply in terms of watts(250 watts could be enough depending on your components), and if possible one that's certified as 80+ efficiency. Your electricity bill will be lower and you will have a...

Cheers matey,
I actually had a read of that late last night after I posted. That server software sounds awesome :O .
One final, ok maybe 2 questions :)
Is the Hauppagge HVR 1300 compatible with the mediaserver as I require Freeview and SKY through RF?
As this is lead by Frodo, can we stream to XBMC? Edit: Found the thread for...

Hi all,
First post..I'll be jumping in to the HTPC thing very soon and was hoping you can maybe give some advice as there's a lot...
I am not sure that there is a definitive answer to that question - it will depend upon the capabilities of the display itself. Some displays will only support the standard TV signals (480p, 576p, 720p ... and so on) through the HDMI input, while others may support the common PC resolutions as well (like 640x480, 1024x768, .... etc)...

The best test is football or icehockey.
Do you connect your HTPC via VGA? 50Hz via VGA is usually impossible on most LCDs. If you have the option I'd recommend trying a DVI or HDMI connection.
From my experience 75Hz is ok until you start watching sports and similar stuff.

I have almost everything up and running, and the HD2400 is great!
Very cheap, quiet (there are silent versions coming soon, but no need imo) and great playback.
Tonight I will test it with the Cyberlink Power DVD decoder to take full advantage of the hardware HD decoding.
I'll let you know how it goes, but I am already very happy...

Hi all,
my 9800 (XXL) with RGB to TV(SCART) connection produces a vertical, 1 cm wide, green/white bar on the right side of my TV, if put into S3 and waking up again. This does only happen in S3 mode, in S4- hibernate everthing is fine.
The difference between S4- Hibernate and S3- Standby is...

I also plan to add...

Why the push for HDMI? As I recall, DVI and HDMI map pin-for-pin (except audio, of course). And I would be willing to bet that MB doesn't support the audio anyway (esp. since it's labelled "digital video out" in the diagram).
Seems to me you get a LOT more MB options if you just look for a MB with DVI out and pony up the 20 bucks...

I see dman's doing heavy development concerning h264 support in tv server atm. I wish he could spent some time looking back at hauppauge support too. Once the guys in the other forum found out what's going on, they were able to support hauppauge dvb-s2 within a realy short time....

Is it true what the "supported tvcards wiki" says, that Hauppauge Nova-S PLUS card supports dvb-s2?
I've been looking at this card for a HTPC. The PVR550 seems to work, even though the remote is not native. As far as I can tell, the cards are identical.
Can anyone offer advice? If the chipset is the same & the cards are essentially the same, will it work, or does Media Portal have to be specifically configured for each type?

I built my first HTPC using a silverstone lascala series case for the living room. I had allot of cooling problems, and the case was just adequate, nothing special other than it could easily hold 5 HDDs. I guess I also broke my teeth on this one figuring out how to keep it cool and quiet. At that time 300GBs was large but as soon as...

i think power consumptions are overrated.
There are like 10000000000000000000000000000000000's of threads where people are sad that this and that doesn't work and then some guy says "it's your powersupply it needs to be at least 450 to 500 W and don't look at the wattage take x powersupply from x supplier with this amount of amps on...

There's been a lot of talk regarding the ATI 2400 & 2600 chipsets with their big selling points being DX10, HD, built-in 5.1 sound, low power - hence possibly passive cooling and inexpensive too.
They certainly look to be a great card for HTPC's.

On my SNES-PC I need to fit two small Laptop fans onto a normal motherboard. As best I can tell both fans are 5 amp. I was thinking I might be able to rig them both onto a normal fan hookup, but would rather not burn them both up as they are rather hard to come by, at least the style I was using.
So, if you have any ideas that...

Of course, I should have known that!

I will get a DVI-HDMI cable for now to use with my current videocard.
Will wait a little longer for the upgrade, maybo also upgrade my mobo and stuff in one go.
Thanks for the help.

It's a waste to buy a expensive screencard for beter video playback. A more expensive screencard will make menu eyecandy be faster but video playback is all about cpu , memory , codec's and VERY little graphics card.
