Why wouldnt it work for Videos and Music ? He already mentioned that all MediaFiles are stored on a NAS, and remote network shares access is no problem for MediaPortal. Also, any fairly recent (last 4 years I would imagine) onboard graphics component can cope with Video content, you only ever need a dedicated graphics card for 3d.

Thanks very much for the reply aidbish. I've got all the bits for my new improved HTPC except for a tuner card. I have a couple of questions if you don't mind. How are the channel changing times with the card? I've heard that some cards are faster than others (I've heard that Avermedia have quick times). Did you get the DNTV...

Thanks Trevor. I'll certainly check out the silent cards - I know my current 'normal PC' card makes a fair amount of noise, so that's a good point. I'm pleased that using DVI direct to the TV will also work without lipsync problems - that certainly widens my choice of card. Cheers ...Steve

I happen to have an extra HDD to try Vista on, so I installed it into my HTPC and gave it a whirl. I've run the Vista betas on it before, but until the build right before RC 1, it never supported any of my hardware. Then suddenly, that release was made public, and EVERYTHING was supported. MP ran ever since then, with varying degrees...

There are different 690G boards - some with TV-out on mobo or bracket - some only internaly (but they all got TV-out). If you want to use a TV-out, then get Asus (HDMI-version) or Gigabyte (+ some others), and stay away from MSI. PS: nVidias answer to 690G looks promising (the 7050s)

PVR-Scheduler solves the standby issue, also does many other things related to control of MP, EPG updates etc. From what i can find, there are 2 dual dvb-t cards that do not have this issue, one is the pinnacle (PCI) the other is the terratec cinergy 2400i (PCI-E). Thought about changing to the Terratec, but as the Hauppauge...

Go read the forum. I'm sure that there are more people who recommend the FireDTV if they had the choice between these two cards. The support from the manufacturer (driver / firmware updates) also is better. You could buy both cards and try them over a long time and choose yourself what is the better one for your needs :-) -level20peon

MSI K9AGM2-FIH - like every other onboard card it does not accelerate h.264 above SD resolution but otherwise the performance is just nice, the RTLK888 is just excellent (you need a bracket for S/PDIF though - easy to solder yourself). The audio can be mapped to the HDMI port as well. PCIe and 2 PCI slots.

MP1 MP2 Satellite? DE
If you are willing to sacrifice quality, then STB -> analogue TV-card (pref. HW-based) is an option. You do "need" MCE-remote w/blasters (or eq.) to change channel (and of course a STB). If you know you can get it to work, you should, however, consider getting a DVB-S card.

I have several HTPCs and many different cards. Dual cards 'can' have the advantage of only needing antennae connection. I don't have a Hauppage card (yet) but they seem to be more universally common. That can be handy if you want to try LinuxMCE or MythTV in the future or even if want to have a dual booting PC. I don't recommend Dvico...

Anandtech hasn't compared the HD cards. They don't even directly compare the ATi 650 and Hauppage cards. They only compare the ATi and NVidea analog tuners. However, if you look at the comments you'll see they say the Hauppage cards are about the same in quality as the ATi 550 chipset and they do say the 650 is better than the...

My shuttle HTPC does something like that. Instead of a cpu fan it has block that sits on top of the cpu. It moves the heat through 4 heat pipes to a large 120mm fan and radiator set. When everything is working properlly, meaning there are no dust hippos on the radiator fins, its the most quiet PC I've ever had.
