The server runs without the client.
When a recording is scheduled it is scheduled on the TV Server, the client then doesn't need to do anything.
As to why it failed? I don't know. You should take a look at your log files and see if there is anything suspicious, or you post them here with some more details about the situation...

Installed the last snapshot of the TV server, did a rescan with the januari 9 Multikabel transponder list, and all channels are now found and can watch NGC-HD again!
