Would MediaPortal be able to view the tv/movies on the WHS connected to my server and then play them?

Indeed... I've got all my media on a single fileserver [Windows 2000 Server] running on my network.
I mapped a copule of network drives on my HTTP to the shares on that fileserver and then pointed MP towards those network drives.

Works like a charm, even with HD [x.264/720p or 1080p] content.

    Thanks for that :)

How do I use this option? I'm finding it quite hard to use the settings/config thing :(

I don't know about MP2 but as you said you tried MP1 too, how is the MP music config ? MP(1) will only use LAV if you select "Internal DirectShow player" as music output, but then you lose gapless playback. If you you don't have multichannel music you can choose WASAPI as the output and set the number of speakers to stereo. I have...
