Sorry to hear you're having trouble with the new release.
There are a myriad of potential causes for slow channel change times. So, even if other people were experiencing the same thing as you (I haven't seen any reports at this stage), there's no guarantee that everybody's problems have the same cause.
Please could you post log files [generated by the watchdog, using option 1] so we can figure out and what is going on for you.

Start the watchdog tool.
Select option 1 and start MP.
Go to the TV section and change channels 3 times to show us the problem.
Close MP.
Post/attach the zip file generated by the watchdog.
If TV Server is installed on a separate PC to MediaPortal, please also zip and attach the log files from TV Server (open TV Server config, click "open log directory" in the top left corner, zip all those files, and attach).

In "MP Config" the following setting enables the display of channel numbers in the TV EPG:

Can anyone tell me the step-by-step procedure for bringing up a second channel in pip mode? I can only do it sometimes, after many tries, and it’s not clear what I am doing that makes it work on those occasions when it does. Cannot find guidance on the site.

So, you're power cycling the TV, but not putting the PC to sleep ?
In General => Startup/Resume settings, try checking "Ignore Windows resolution/size changes"
In Codecs and Render, try selecting the specific audio device rather than "Default DirectSound device"
Just ideas, no guarantee this will do anything.
