I've been also looking for a remote control in some online shops but didn't really find a cheap one. Instead I found a some nice TV offers - I have an old TV set and so I thought why not, let's do some TV comparison shopping and maybe I find something cheap. Nevertheless, still looking for a cheap remote control, preferably the SRM 5100. Can anyone point me to a bargain?

Awesome or awesome? Works with MP 1.1.0 Beta and Vista 64. Thank you very much!

Just to be safe, for the future, where can I find updates on this mod?

Hi guys. I just wanted to say thanks for all of your information on this forum.

I have used this info (and info from elsewhere) to create three concise pages of information about using MCE Remotes - it covers all the techniques out there broken into the various issues involved. While it has a slight EventGhost bend, I tried to make it generic. I thought you guys might find it useful:

MCE_Remote_FAQ - How to Use a Windows Media Center Edition IR Remote
MCE Remote Drivers for Windows XP - How to install a MCE Remote on Windows XP, even if it does not come with XP drivers (e.g. the Philips SRM5100).
MCE_Remote_Bruno - A more advanced alternative (unnecessary for 90% or users) is to use MCE Replacement Drivers by Bruno FLEURETTE or 'and-81'.

Thanks for all info here.
Nice try peopz, but the XP-drivers from this page do not function 100% well in Windows XP.

Only a few buttons will work: On/Off-button, Volume, OK, arrows up/down/left/right, numberkeys, Enter and Clear button.

All the other buttons do NOT work, so for me it's impossible to use the Channel Up and Down buttons in Mediaportal for instance. Green button doesn't also do anything.

Anyone got full working drivers for XP?

"All the other buttons do NOT work" give list please, you only mention 2 buttons in the post.

Green button works on mine, in MP it switches menu mode.

Also you dont need special drivers for XP, I will post how mine is fully working later today.

Cheers

That would be very great because Vista or Windows 7 are no option for me to run Mediaportal 1.0.2. and TV-server in. I really want to work the remote control with Windows XP.

I used this driver for the SRM 5100 and its USB dongle, also tried the eHome infrared drivers. Same result :(

In Mediaportal Config -> Remote -> I put on "Use Microsoft MCE remote or keyboard", that's enough I suppose.

Here is a summary which buttons don't work in XP with SP3 for me (and work well in Vista, tested it):
- all videofuncions (play, record, etc)
- green button with Windows logo
- <- arrow button
- "i" button
- speaker button
- +/- (channel up/down buttons)
- 4 functionbuttons above the number keys
- [T] button
- colored buttons

The only buttons who work well in XP are the ones i mentioned in my post above, and of course the "mode" function.

I am a bit confused, are you wanting the remore for MP or to operate XP ? there is a difference, my focus was a solution for MP under XP.

Also, I would assume all buttons have a function, I never use colour ones in MP - dont even know if they have a use.

my focus was a solution for MP under XP.

That's what I meant too ;)

I tried to figured out a bit my SRM5100 does in MP for me in both OS:

SRM5100 buttons in Mediaportal 2.0.1..............................[XP].........................[Vista]
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Videofunctions knobs in circle............................................nothing...................play/pause/rec/stop/rew/fw/begin/end
Windows button................................................................nothing...................starts WMC install
Backspace.........................................................................nothing..................esc/back (same as Clear button)
i.........................................................................................nothing..................enter
OK.....................................................................................enter......................enter
Cursor arrows...................................................................up/down/l/r.............up/down/l/r
+/- Left..............................................................................volume up/down.....volume up/down
+/- Right............................................................................nothing..................channel up/down
4 buttons above number keys:
[o].....................................................................................nothing..................record functions
[=].....................................................................................nothing..................same as windows button
[>].....................................................................................nothing..................same as windows button
[<>]...................................................................................nothing..................record menu
Numbers 0 - 9....................................................................numbers.................numbers
Clear..................................................................................esc.........................esc
[T]......................................................................................nothing...................teletext
Enter.................................................................................OK...........................OK (same as "i" I suppose)

As you can see, lots of "nothing" fields for my remote MP in XP.
Most frustrating is that the Channel Up/Down doesn't do anything in MP in XP.

Many thanks for the answer. So far I've used Logitech's Harmony hub. This allows you to control all components (including the media portal). I have now contacted the Sofabaton hotline. It should also work here like with the Harmony. Unfortunately, not all of the IR codes are correct. You can also learn commands here. But that doesn't...
