I could never get mpg recording working - I use .ts recordings instead.

ts format works for recording, but only in last few days have I got scheduled recordings to work reliably. This was achieved by unchecking the "reinitialise TV service" option in Powerscheduler and also allowing PC to go to standby itself. Thanks again to help from other threads.
