After biting the bullet and doing another complete fresh install of MP and skins, I narrowed the problem cause down to the movingpictures db.
By restoring from backup the artwork, databases, etc. one by one, the problem did not reoccur until I copied over the movingpictures db, and the problem disappeared after deleting the db...
