yes, XenForo is optimised for linear view. I won't expect to see a threaded mode anytime soon.
Even in vbulletin it's just working correctly under special cicumstances and depends on users pushing the correct buttons on new msgs.

When you register, you are an "Registered" User
After 14 days and 5 Posts you get promoted to "Portal Member"
With 50 Posts you get promoted to "Portal Pro" - which then enables you to reply to threads in the ::Area 51::
