On a 2th thought, actually a 202th thought, what are the chances that Skype will change their network protocol? After all, an older version, say v4.2, still works, agreed it maybe has not all the bells and wissles of the latest version, but it works.
As I see it, on a living room HTPC, if we would be be able to place and receive video calls through Skype from our couch, that would be all we need.

In that perspective, maybe it is worth the effort to build a plugin based on the latest Skype version with API. Technically it is possible, I provided already the base for the video part, it still needs a fair amount of work though...

As stated before, all we need is a coder with time on his/her hands, and a genius in MP skin design.

I would love to do the coding part, but I simply don't have the time...:(
I'm willing to act as some sort of "coach", explaining how I see this plugin, and how to programmaticaly achieve that, should someone take on the challenge.

@Arturas1976 : Did think of that before, but the simple fact is that Skype is far more used by the general public than any of its sibblings, for me, this is not an option.

One other thing - wouldn't this plugin not more suitable for MP2? I'm only thinking about the PIP optin which could mean to have anincomming skype call during TV for example? I like the idea having a chatwindow overlapping the current programm without the need to stop the playback.

Edit - just read the MP2 talk - ok - I'm not a friend of making plugins payed for an open source project. Donate - yes - of course - but appstore - no.

Ok, then how about a crowdfunding project (e.g. on http://www.indiegogo.com)?

Well - it's your decission to go that way - and I only can tak for myself of course - but being forced to pay for an addon to an Open source project feels strange. Of course - like amped where you can decide if you want to have an AD version or a "pro" one on your Android is fine - it's just teh MP Part which should stay clean. What I could accept (again - for myself) is to have a free version with limited features and a full version with donate key. So teh user can decide which way he want#s to go (like - free version text only or resolution limt or pay version to get more actuall version earlier or whatever). Probably if teh price is not that high most of the users would gor for the buy version anyway.[DOUBLEPOST=1380018174][/DOUBLEPOST]

Just used my lunchbreak to discuss the idea - and what came up was that - at least as far I know - there is no TV set which has a "sidebar" option. So - going that raod - why not display facebookfeeds, Twitter, Skype, ... in tranparent sidebar (which you can sitch on and off) so you stay informed what's going on? Or - I think about the ispy plugin - having the cam displayed there ...

Well I am sure you are not feeling strange at all about it. You most likely have an Android Smartphone - the OS is Open Source and you probably have some apps on it you paid for. Exact same thing. ;)

Lots of interesting thinking and creativity going on in here, but again can I strongly suggest that the first post of this thread be completely re-written so that it makes it clear that there is NO skype for MP likely in the near future, that there's active discussion about possible approaches but no code exists, that Microsoft have made it exceedingly difficult to produce a useful skype add-in for MP, etc?
This thread should be a pure development thread so that people looking for a plugin don't get frustrated reading through 21 pages only to find nothing exists.

    Right then,

Since it looks like it will be impossible to integrate skype with MP, is there any option to use another VOIP/Video Conferencing software?

    http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/fed-up-with-skype-here-are-6-of-the-best-free-alternatives/

Half of my family live on the other side of the world, so integration of a VOIP system with MP would be fantastic for me, and others like me. We might just all have to sack-off Skype.

Okay, I reached out to some of my peeps at Skype. If this is something we wanted to do, we can. The API will be left intact for older versions of Skype. This means your HTPC will have to stay in the 5.x-6.x versions and not upgrade to 7.x when it gets released in Dec.

I know this option sucks and for many of you it is not an option, but I thought I would you know anyway.

I meant use MP client to try to spot how it's requesting streams for specific channels and then try to do the same with VLC. TV Server development looks dead so I'm afraid you're going to have to figure that out by yourself if it's even possible.

I don't know about MP2 but as you said you tried MP1 too, how is the MP music config ? MP(1) will only use LAV if you select "Internal DirectShow player" as music output, but then you lose gapless playback. If you you don't have multichannel music you can choose WASAPI as the output and set the number of speakers to stereo. I have...
