I could only recommend doing a clean install again.
Deinstall, rename the \Program Files\Team Mediaportal directory to something else,
and install.
It worked out of the box for me.
Also look at the error.log - maybe something will show there.

Well I hope this is a permenant fix! It looks like it wasn't a codec/MP issue after all.
I went through ALL my settings again and then finally went to my Realtek Soundcard properties, for some reason it was defaulted to output SPDIF at 196Khz. I set this to 96 and now mp3s work fine!
Hope this helps someone else with this issue.
