To answer my own problem, it only took 6 months and a few 100 restarts...
If teletext is enabled under TV, but not DVB-text, and you watch a TV channel with teletext subs, then try to play an AVI you get this problem.
Enabling DVB subs is enough for this issue to go away completly, so it seems that its something with the TeleText...
