Something did come up on another thread that shed some light on this. The minimum files are always used, so this is the length of buffer you get for rewinding live TV. If you pause live TV, it will continue recording up to the maximum files setting.
But I still don't know whether lots of small files is better or worse than one...

I got an update for Lifeview DVB player which works. Their web site was down for weeks.

For question #3, have you tried a remote desktop? I use RealVNC and often use it to tweak MP from another room or even from work. Windows has an on-board virtual desktop and there are several others out there, but I haven't used them. RealVNC works like a champ!
