worked it out. WMP was disabled as a Windows feature. Once reenabled it allowed me to install WMP11.

You don't need to make any backup for a new skin. Setup a new skin, choose it in MP config and start MP. If you want to switch back you only need to choose your old skin in MP config or within MP settings and voilà streamedMP is back :D
If you reinstall MP the backup is necessary!

It's happened before that I can't play certain files unless I play a different file first, otherwise I get a CODEC error, or I just get a CODEC error that doesn't seem to always happen.

Yeah, i kind of feel the same way -- the home screen is great, but once you go further in the design - changing layouts etc, if there was a theme with none of them options it would be perfect for them. I think i'll just use the skin editor and take them all out.
