ffdshow does indeed play a lot of file formats but NOT necessarily the best.
For example NVIDIA PureVideo (not free) will do way better job on decoding MPEG2 both SD and HD sources than ffdshow
CoreAVC (note free) will do again way better job on decoding h264 files than ffdshow.
AC3filter for ac3 sound again is better than...

If you load up the configuration menu by click on the "setup media portal" icon.
open the movies menu and click on movie database.
There is a tab called edit, click on that and it will let you edit all your movies manually, including posters.

This is a good point, and the fact that you can't set the audio renderer for "My TV" from within the setup utility has confused many new MP users....:(

you defently need a faster CPU than your 1GHz Athlon to enable post processing with 3-4 filters. FFDShow post processing can make your picture look much better but since its a software decoder it uses to much CPU if you enable luma, chroma filters and image resize.

If .shn will not play using WMP10/11 then they will as likely not play in MediaPortal.
You could try installing the file extension manually into, MPsetup\music\music extenstions. then type ".shn" and then use the add button.
With so much work going on with the new music engine, not totally sure which formats besides the default...
