Here is the state things, I still get conflict messages on trying to record anything from settop box and any analogue station, so I tried doing a manual record i.e.
Pressed record while watching Sky One (record current programme)
Changed channel to BBC 1 and pressed record again...

I get this error msg when my machine first boots up into MP if I try and click on TV:
