I'm using nVidias Purevideo all around the system - And as far as I know, that has nothing to do with the recording part right ?..
But since I'm very happy with how everything else looks, DVDs, DivX files, WMV HD clips etc, I don't think tampering with the Purevideo thing will be a good idea.. I'm sure I have to find a way to set...

.mp4 is a container (just like .avi) which can contain video and audio in many formats. I'm not sure that Quicktime can play MPEG-4 AVC H.264 inside an .mp4... however, it is peferctly capable of playing apple's proprietry MPEG-4 format inside .mp4.

Make sure your renderer is set to default sound device under Settings DVD. (don't ask, have not got a clue why it affected TV)

this onboard s3 vga is imho causing your problems.
MP uses DX9 and VMR9 for display and playback. Unfortunately these technologies aren't supported well by this inboard solution. You should consider to spend your system a decent DX9 card.

Solved the problem by deinstalling the illiminable codecs and installed another ogg codec.
I've installed this one:

So now it is working as it should be. :D
