I quit mediaportal, rebooted the system, still nothing. Until I changed the skin to blue2 and than changed it back. Now it works.
Maybe something due to a kind of buffer?

Ok... so maybe fonts weren't to blame. I did a couple of different things at once and I'm not really sure which one of them solved the problem... I changed my standby mode from S1 to S3 and also swapped in a slightly newer video card I had laying around (6600GT). So all is good now.
