I've read that i can store for each movie a nfo-file wich contains the imdb-ID so Moving-Pictures can handle all Infos...
I didn't know exactly why, but the backdrop-pictures fades two times on switching!
Now I've compared the differences of the codes and I only changed the picture-resolution from 768x576 to 720x480 of all objects that are also listed in your code and now it works perfectly!

On my rig 0.6.6 loads the backdrops way faster and syncs perfect to when the movie is selected.

dunno if I can help, just a thought I had - you say MediaPortal 'hangs' if you 'go full screen with Moving Pictures'; are you typically using 'windowed' mode, and then going to fullscreen when watching a movie? I use KMPlayer as an external player for both video and DVD but only in the case of the latter do i have the /DVD commandline.
