I solved this problem myself.
Although IRTrans reported it was using port 80, it was infact using port 21000, so after setting this port number and selecting IRTrans and deselecting MCE remote, the remote works (except for the known issue with double button presses for arrow keys)

I was looking for a solution a long time, even I have been using an older version (Mediaportal 1.0 RC2) wich had blue2 skin to avoid hanging.

I guess we all get different results. I have tried the 4.4.1 BDA driver and it detected less channels than 4.5.0. I also tried the WDM driver, this detected more channels than 4.4.1 but took forever to scan. In the end I went back to the 4.50 BDA driver for now.
