No MP should not run slow, it should also save your settings.
can you let us know which version of MP you are running ie 0.2.2.0 with or without TVServer (have to be the same release svn).
Also the mediaportal log would be useful.

well, since I posted (a while ago now) I performed a complete re-install of the OS and everything, the problem went away briefly, and has now been replaced by a worse one...when I try to start MP, it just sits there and consumes more and more memory until it dies. I posted a query on this too, no response yet :(...

Edit the "references.xml" file of the skin thats it complaining about. Change the version to number to "0.2.2.1"...that should solve it for you.

Personally delete all channels and rescan Dover only, makes life a lot easier on the EPG front and names.
If you have more than one DVB card, assign channels to the other card, otherwise again you can end up with the renaming game and it does have a habit of screwing the EPG up

Turns out it was actually the video side of things that was going wrong. I couldn't visually see the problem maybe the smallest of smallest jerks but it appears it was enough to put the sync out.
This is how I fixed it.
- Went into the ffdsho video decoder configuration
- Decoder options.
