General questions about HTPC Hardware go in here.
Never ever use composite ;) It is hard to give general recommendations as even two identical cards can differ in quality.. Best would be to find a dealer who allows you to return the card. Personally I'd go for ATI if it depends on TV-out

Just thought I'd post this in case anyone else was interested in this case. Despite everything I've read about the LC03 having only one rear exhaust fan - including on the Silverstone web site - mine arrived yesterday with two fans. I usually buy cheap cases for home use, but work with IBM servers which are in very slick chassis. I...

The general consensus on SPCR is that two 80mm fans undervolted to produce the same airflow as one 120mm fan are quieter than the one 80mm fan would be... Something to keep in mind or HTPC design, especially since 80mm fans are easier to fit. I wouldn't bother with anything smaller with 80mm, though. If you need a quiet 92mm fan...

Agree, ranking cards is hard when most people only have direct experience with 1 or 2. I chose a PVR-350 after researching variouse HTPC-related sites. It's been around the longest and is basically a "reference" card for getting HTPC/DVR?PVR software to work. But does it provide the best quality? Too many variables to objectively...

Thanks for the reply DMAN & Callifo. It seems that the consensus is for the Nvidia video card. I agree that more ram is better and will source another 512M. Once I have got it finished I will post photos etc for comment. Thanks again for the advice.

Hello. This is my first post. I'm reading this forum since 2 months and I have made my htpc. It is a laptop with 512 Mo on an Athlon 300+, ATI radeon 9700. Hi again, my amplifier is just via analog chinch connected to the soundcard. Currently i consider to buy a THX speaker system. The Audigy has 7.1 output, and Teufel has nice (and expensive ;)) speaker sets which can be connected directly to the soundcard. Sure the PVR 150 would do, nice card. For VNC look on...

first of all, many thanks for the reply. :) ... and given that this is the main reason I want the box, that's of great concern. :( Hmmm, well I have another box that can use the ram if it won't help, so worst case is the backup box has a bit more pep. So far so good; it's working like a charm right now with the base OS install...

Why such a complex solution? Unless you already have the speakers you can use a set of computers speakers that will include all the amplififiers you need. I guees you will find a lot a choice at all prices. The following one is very nice: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16836119106 (It's just an example) If...

Hi Alexeix, The compro remote has a great layout and would be excellent with MP. I spent some time trying to get it to work using WinLirc and a serial receiver but it was too much stuffing around. Hi Callifo, Thanks for your help. I bought a low profile GF5200 card on the weekend. That solved all my problems (well, apart from the memory leak  ). Now timeshifting and recording is very smooth. I still want to do the other upgrades but at least the main problem is fixed. Thanks again, Marcus.
