I also have a plasma and would love to have the screensaver come on after a few minutes when the video is paused.

Is there no setting that makes MP activate the screensaver when a video is paused? I fear for the burn in on my plasma.
Appearantly the problem has something to do with the tvguide.xml being stored on a network share. I created a script that copies the xml from the share, after the tvguide is updated, to the local drive and pointed the xmltv tv server plugin to that location and that fixed the problem.
