Ok, after much tinkering and wasting time I have come to the conclusion that the TV card drivers are causing BSOD's and they don't appear to like working with MP in terms of channel tuning :(
I've now ordered an Avermedia USB2 DVB tuner - lets hope that works better!!

You need to use MyBlaster which uses the MCE receivers IR Blasters to change the channel on the sky box. If you set a recording MP would prompt you on screen if watching TV and then it would change channel afaik.

I still dont see what the cable modem has to do with the choice of video card, but i would normally give the following recommandations:
If you are serious about HD playback i would get a 7600GT. If you are connection to an LCD TV with a HDMI input, there are a few version out there with HDMI output.

When i edit the settings form my card in setupmp by checking and the unchekin "use this card for viewing TV" and "Use this card for recording TV" then i can get the card working again..
