I do just that to move mediaportal between my test bench desktop and HTPC pcs.

Please fill out the support template (sticky in this topic) and post your mediaportal.log (Configuration also writes a log!). Are you using the wizard? If yes, finish the wizard without scanning for any channels and then use the configuration tool to scan (somehow that is more stable, do not ask why).

Try updating to service pack 2, MP relies on XP being pretty much upto date.
Recommend trying uninstall.
Why using RC3 and not 0.2 as a lot faster, and see if you get the same error.
