Not sure why no-one replied, but just to follow up my own post, I eventually got it working by a full uninstall and reinstall of Mediaportal, TV Server, and SQL Server.
Sledgehammer to crack a nut, and all that!
I'm a very happy new user now.
Now to find some plugins to play with...

I have the same problem, my startup is now a batch file that wait 30 sec (ping localhost), and then stop and start the TVService, then start media portal.
This is the only way I have found to get media portal to start up after a reboot.

Sorry mate, didn't have any luck (like you only the basic buttons work on XP). Tried a few different remote plugin's but no good. Ended up using the remote on Vista MC where all buttons work ok. :(

See if Watchdog screen is active (use ALT+TAB). If so, close it.
If the remote responds now everything is OK. Sometimes there might be no watchdog screen. In that case while MP 1.0 is still running...

PC tuners, especially older one have a very low reception threshold, so any weak signal that you may experience on a normal tv set is amplified greatly on a pc tuner, ie it is a lot worse.
