Regarding Q2, this is by design. If you want the playback to stop, you should use the [stop] on your remote (you really, really should use one) or [B] on keyboard.

All fixed :) It seems I was having two separate issues:
1) MediaPortal having a hissy fit over the TV Card drivers (don't know why, but it works now)
2) SQL server issues

Mediaportal understands "exit mediaportal" command. If you use a MCR Remote with MCE receiver than you can custom map a button to this command (Remote/MCE/mapping/buttonname/all layers-action-exit mediaportal)
you have to know if you use Harmony as MCE over iMon receiver than this is not a MCE Remote anymore for...

your probably right, just go with what ever resolution looks the best, then try to adjust overscan/screen calibration for the balance between overscan and underscan.
to help with screen calibration google "tiger dave" and display the relevant test pattern as a fullscreen slideshow.
