Agree. I mostly did this because I could. Indeed the advantage is only when encoding TV recordings that I want to save for the kids. With MSI over clocking speedstep (I think it is speedstep) still works. The machine runs at only 2.4 Ghz when not under load (CPU-Z). VdR

Actually it can. I have RocketRaid 2220 and all I had to do is enable different mode of operation (via web UI) - that allows more than 2TB on 32bit OS. Sorry, I don't remember all the details... Look into it - may be worth it :)

Right, it's been over 6 months and I thought I'd just close this build off with a final review of the system, and the lessons I've learnt for next time. System Performance: The key point is, it works; play back of all media is stutter free at least. However it becomes obvious when flicking back and forth within video files that...

I don't know if you would say it's any louder. It wasn't noticable for me. Altough It is 2 fans so in principle it's louder. :) It's functional. The aerodynamics of airflow are crucial in a tight space like this. Plus, I'm OCD like that. :D

Well I have browsed e-bay for hardware for my server project but didn't really find anything worth buying so I'll go the luxury way and build a machine from scratch. I also decided that it should be powerful enough to have it do encoding tasks so I don't need to tie up my office machine for that. I'll start a new thread on that...

Thank you. I passed on the DVD, cause I wouldn't use it probably. The card reader would also be nice and cool, but I wouldn't use it neither :) I have old player "in any case" and I can always play any brd, dvd or cd from my desktop over the network. It's much more useful solution, because most of the dvd drives are quite loud. This...

Update: The freezing problem continued occasionally. It now seems to be fixed by a new Hauppauge driver: Nova-T-TD-Stick_3_11_27070_WHQL. Incidentally I'm finding Windows 7 Media Centre (build 7100) pretty stable and I like the red button and teletext support plus subtitles with HD. Unlike all earlier MS offerings that I have tried...

That looks promising since I also was thinking of lightweight, small boxes as additional clients. On the other hand, it will probably only be reserved for citrix and not rdp I guess, no?

Being on a budget and sacrificing estheatics over price and function. Got myself a used Dell GX280 from a recycling company (retrobox.com is a pretty good source for this kinda hardware) It's a mini tower. There is also a program called "HdmiOn", it constantly or itnermittently sends signal telling windows that HDMI is attached/on. Not sure if this actually prevents windows from detecting display is unplugged or not.

That's very well possible the problem. Also the shape of the cpu cooler doesn't seem very optimal to me for a semi passive cooling (some space between fan and cooler). However, I'm not going to make anymore changes if in normal conditions temps stay in the 50-60C range. This is an intel cpu/nvidia chipset board which is quite...

Thanks for the idea. Masking the front of the case should be very easy since it's almost completely smooth and the holes could be cut out with an exacto knife. I'll look into this stuff later today. But now I'm wondering if a dark marker might even be easier.

Hi, I have some problems with my HTPC and a Panasonic 42PZ70. If I hold the up/down key for scrolling through the film menu (some seconds) my screen went off and it seems that a reinitialisation of the screen takes place. This is reproducible every x seconds. Pressing the down/up key shorter seems to be no impact. I don't know why...

Little update here, I've changed some hardware things on the setup of my HTPC. I've replaced my power supply for a more silent one, it's got a nice 120 mm fan at very low rpm, it's a Recom 550 watt PSU, reasonable PSU fot it's price and quite silent, I have to put my ear on my HTPC to hear it..... And I've swapped the LG DVD writer...
