If all else fails, you can create your menu buttons without a label, then place the label separately over the button (2 copies for each focused and unfocused conditions, with appropriate visibility). I don't think this will work for animated/scrolling menu's (facade and MyHome menu) but works great for static menus.

I don't think the 'white.bmp' is used for anything else. It is 13x13 but when it is stretched for the keyboard text box, it looks absolutely crappy (imo), so I enlarged it to 50x500 and put a border around it. Now the keyboard has nice square corners and is set off from the background.

however, any change to "posY" seems to change the height and not affect the y-axis positioning at all.

you can not remove default plugins xml´s from skins for mediaportal.
All default Pluginstuff must be inside a skin to work proper for MP.
So all Pluginstuff what is inside original default skin Blue3, you can not delete in the skins.
But you can change the gfx to empty ones with same names. 1 pixel * 1 pixel size.
