problem fixed was a problem with all user mediaportal folder
copying the entire folder is causes problems plugins not working

Some more info on this issue, as I have been struggling with it for a while, but now it seems to be solved. This has especially been an issue on some childrens DVDs, where the menus might be a bit more "colorful" than normal DVDs.
