I've your problem : I've solved with :
1) go to program files\team mediaportal\tv server's directory.
2) Lauch tvserver uninstall executable.
3) remove with basic options the tvserver (without deleting your settings)
3) restart the pc
4) execute the MP 1.0.2 installer and it will reinstall the tvserver.

The font in it's self is fine. But when a button is selected there is no caption at all. Tried the same xml on 1.0.0 and it works fine, so the bug must have been introduced in a later version. Special characters work fine on all other UI elements.

Have you been into TV server configuration yet ? If not it may have lost the database password like mine did. My symptoms were no guide and mediaportal was running very slowly. I cant confirm your other symptoms as the lack of guide data made me suspect (and fix) TV Server configuration.

I had no problems with my recording of League of Extraordinary Gentlemen. Good idea to keep on the right side of SWMBO.
Like PD I have never looked back since moving to TV Server. If you do go down this route also take a look at 4therecord. It provides extra scheduling functionality.
